In London to find out the truth, but to find something else

Synopsis

An unsuitable match for the viscount

And not just because she vexes him!

Bookworm Rose Lennox has no interest in making her debut. She’s only in London to discover the truth of her parentage. Her sponsor’s nephew, James, the Viscount Ashbourne, is equally cynical about the marriage mart, yet they still rile each other every time they speak! But the sparks of animosity soon become flames of attraction. Still, Rose’s unknown past means she can never be a viscount’s wife…

My review

Even being triplets, Rose and her sisters couldn’t be more different from each other. So does Rose enjoy a quiet life, and making a debut at the season in London is the last thing on her mind. But in London is also an opportunity to discover the truth about her parentage. Because being an orphan, has given her many questions without a chance of having an answer.
Rose and her sisters can luckily count on the goodwill of Lady Ashbourne, who is happy to sponsor the triplets.
With strong opinions about the marriage mart, Rose finds an ally in Lady Ashbourne’s nephew, viscount Ashbourne. Yet somehow they manage to rile each other up with each time they see each other. And then suddenly feelings start to change… even if Rose’s unknown parentage means that she could never be a viscount’s wife…

Some may say that Regency stories may be predictable. That you know how it will all end. But even if that may true, so what? And it matters what happen between the start and the end what makes a story. And this book for sure has a very interesting in – between!

I liked it how Rose was part of a triplet. Twins, that happens often in books, but triplets, even in books is a rarity.
And I was very curious to see how different each sister would be from each other.

I have to say, that Rose was a very recognizable character, as I saw a lot of my own traits in her. Obviously our love for books, but also rather enjoying a quiet night in rather than ‘going out’. And I liked it to see how Rose prefers to build her own future rather than having the goal of just getting married to the best party.

It saddened me to read how all the sisters were orphans, having no idea of who their parents were. And I understood their need to find out more. Because doesn’t everyone want to know where they came from?
Thus while Rose didn’t really wanted to go to London, it would give her the opportunity to finally get an answer to all their questions.

And in fact, we see Rose a bit like a fish out of water. The way of life she and her sisters are accustomed to couldn’t be more different than London – life. Yet we see how all three of them, but especially Rose, doesn’t change herself. She stays true to herself, never losing her own idealisms.

James, a.k.a. the Viscount, for sure also was one with strong opinions. He grew up being rather free to do how he pleased, but as his life changed, it’s up to him to take up the task of being Viscount. He is also against marriage, although he knows that it’s a must for someone in his position.

Now, seeing Rose and Viscount Ashbourne together, was just hilarious! For some reason, they bring out the worst in each other, and just keep on clashing. But it was also sweet to see how on some matters they agree, and how their bantering slowly turns into teasing into more. And it was nice to see how opinions would change by just meeting the right person.

Nevertheless, even if some of their opinions change, we also see how some things are
non – negotiable. While some decisions for sure would be in their own, perhaps even selfish favour, their respect and care for each other is too high. And they are ready to pay a personal price instead of ‘dragging’ the other one down.

I loved reading this book, as we see how a change of feelings doesn’t mean a change of opinions or who you are at core.
We also see how even the most hardheaded person can fall in love, even if initially it all started with jesting each other.

But… after finishing this book, and seeing a lot of resolutions, I still have several questions for which I just *need* an answer. Luckily for me, there are two other sisters of the triplets – pack and hopefully, beside their own stories, I will receive all the answers! 😊
