My review

Three years ago Patsy Clemens returned back home in Croftwood, with only crushed dreams. Her life now is a safe one, without any real ambitions or dreams. But it doesn’t bother her, as long as she has her best friend Oliver by her side.
Oliver is not only her best friend, but also the owner of the trendy coffee where Patsy works. And contrary to Patsy, he has big dreams. And one of them is to bring back the old cinema at the park to life. And he wants Patsy to be his business manager.
The cinema however is in need of a lot of TLC, both the building and the whole cinematic setup. With the help of local architect Matt and amateur projectionist Ed, Patsy and Oliver hope to bring the cinema back to life.
And perhaps it will bring Patsy also back to life? 

It always saddens me to read a story where a main character has been through something terrible in the past, that now makes her hold back from even dreaming.
So that is why I immediately felt sorry for Patsy, even without knowing the full details of what she has been though. Because even f she seems content with her life now, it’s clear that she still is looking behind her shoulders. And that is not fair, as she also deserves to have big(ger) dreams than just working at the coffee shop of her best friend Oliver.
So even if she doesn’t have the ability to be a real partner with Oliver’s new acquisition, I was happy for her having a chance to do something else, and step outside, not only out of her comfort zone. 

And seeing her opening up, gaining more confidence, and even getting back on the dating scene, was something wonderful, because it’s something Patsy absolutely deserves!
We also see what amazing ideas she has concerning the cinema, showing us her creativity and her brightness. A cleverness she also shows whenever she interacts with the people of Croftwood, even the more difficult characters. 

Yes, this is also a romance story, as Patsy finds herself meeting two men, Ed and Matt. And while with one she gets quickly along greatly, the other one cannot stop from irking her. I am not going to tell you more about this, I will let you discover this all by yourself, also because the romance doesn’t feel like the main subject. 

Because it’s all about Patsy finding herself again, with the help of the best kind of friends you can imagine. Having Oliver by her side, even if he doesn’t know the depth of her fears, means the world to Patsy. And Oliver is such a nice character, appreciating the friendship with Patsy, not ever wanting something in return for everything he does for her.
He wants only the best for Patsy, he wants Patsy to see her potential and to live again. This kind of friendship is the most honest and most genuine of them all, and also the most precious one.  

This kind of friendship, together with finding the courage to live again, are for me the main themes of this story.
This story shows us that sometimes we need a (gentle) nudge in our back to even find the courage to face our most evil enemies. But no matter how scary it may seem, if we dare to stand tall, with the people who truly care surrounding us, even the evilest of enemies can be overcome. And it’s with these same lovely people by your side that you can start to live again, and to dream again…  

It’s obvious that I enjoyed reading this strong story. The author manages perfectly to grasp the essence of how resilient people can be, and how important it is to have great friends by your side, seeing your true potential even when you cannot…

My review

Nina Copeland may seem to have it all, but looks can be deceiving. With a famous brother, she is more used to people getting close to her because of him and not because they are actually interested in Nina.
With her real friends all finding their own happiness, Nina feels more alone and lonely than ever. But luckily she can always count on her neighbour for a chat, and why not, to make her garden look better again.
But Matthew Gilchrist is not the same man after his divorce… He does not want to start dating again, even if everyone around him is pressuring him.
So when Matthew is going to the annual reunion, Nina comes up with the perfect plan: to fake a relationship, to get everyone of their backs. What could possibly go wrong?
But in the romantic setting in the Highlands, are their feelings shifting to something deeper? Can there grow something between these friends, even if Nina has a past she is afraid to confront? 

When I started reading this book, I was all set for a funny, sweet and romantic escape, for both the main characters, but also for myself.
Yet the more I got into the book, I realized that while indeed this was a wonderful romance, it also handled some more serious issues, like the ones Nina is facing, but also Matthew… 

First of all, there is Nina. It may seem that she has it all, and doesn’t (need to) work, but when we take a closer look at her life, we can see that things aren’t that easy for her.
It saddened me on several occasions to see how people come to her only because she is ‘the sister of…’ and not because they want to know Nina for who she really is.
And I also felt that her own friends don’t understand her, it even frustrated me how they somehow didn’t see Nina’s true emotions, the turmoil she was and still is going through.
Plus the problem she got into because she felt useless, made It even more clearer that she is a young woman who doesn’t know how she fits in life, despite/ thanks to the help of her brother. 

Now, it may seem that Nina is a very dark character, but the opposite is true. Yes, she obviously is still having several issues, but she is also a very bright persona.
Because of her volunteering, she has learnt to listen to people around her, and even hear things that are not being said. That lakes her able to understand people better, and even offer help in several occasions, by making them see what they are not seeing. 

She is also a great friend, especially to Matthew. Yes, she had a huge crush on him years ago, but could you blame her?
But that’s not the point… she truly cares about Matthew in a genuine way, she wants to help him, even if that means to be in a fake relationship with him.
And slowly she is able to let Matthew understand that he truly is an amazing man, no matter what his ex said. 

Because Matthew truly is amazing, even if he is a bit awkward at moments! My heart broke when his story was being told, how his hideous ex managed to turn him into an insecure boy, doubting himself in every possible way…
Even at moments he makes a total fool out of himself, I couldn’t stop liking him. His awkwardness touched a soft spot in my heart and no matter what he did or say, he is the kind of guy who can be easily forgiven, because he is just so real… 

Nina and Matthew have very different backgrounds, but that doesn’t stop them from being more than just friendly neighbours. They are the kind of friends that can count on each other no matter what, they will always have each other’s’ back, even if that means going on a family reunion fake – dating. 

And that is what frustrated me in this book… because these two characters are just perfect for each other. hey are what the other person needs. But why does it take so damn long before they finally see that??? 😊
If even Matthew’s family can see that, why can’t they? 

I have to say, Thistle Lodge sounds so amazing. Of course there is the setting, in the Highlands, it already made me dream away. But no matter how great a setting is, it’s mainly the company that can make or break the whole reunion.
And Matthew’s family for sure is a gem, each member adds an ‘amazingness’ to this story in their unique way!  

Reading this story was not only great, but it went even beyond. It was marvellous to see how these broken main characters, who already have each other’s back, discover that together they could find their inner peace, and chase away their demons.
And with the both of them being so caring and understanding, they truly and absolutely deserve every inch of happiness, together. 

This book was funny, hilarious, romantic but also bittersweet at moments. It was the perfect mishmash that made me finish it way too quickly as I just couldn’t put it away!

When a wedding and its plans don’t go as… planned

My review

Penny and Izzy are not only invited to a wedding, but they also have an order for a dress for one of the guests. A guest who wants to steal the show with an amazing swan dress. Obviously it’s something the cousins can manage, once they figured out all the logistics.
Yet things start to turn for the worse when the maker of the wedding cake is found dead in mysterious circumstances. And when another incident is just too coincidental, it’s clear to Penny and Izzy that there is more to the story…
So the two cousins start another investigation, trying to figure out who is out there killing people involved with the wedding.
But that is not the only investigation, as Penny has to decide who to take as her plus one… 

Well, like I said previously, this series is for sure growing on me. And this story absolutely showed me that love can grow slowly! 

A wedding is always a joyful occasion, but I have to admit, the bride and her family and friends are a bit an odd bunch…
Every dynamic felt wrong somehow and I wasn’t always convinced of the pure nature of the feelings. But that was not the focus of this story, and after all, who am I to judge someone when whatever they are doing is making them happy? 

Because the focus is on the murder of course. I have to admit, the first murder was a real strange one. I saw red flags everywhere, and just like Izzy and Penny, I wasn’t sure of it being it an accident, which of course wasn’t! 

Seeing the cousins in action, both sewing and investigating, has become quickly a real treat! I loved seeing that the bond is always getting stronger and stronger, the cousins relying more on each other, and even seeing that bond change from cousins into one that sisters would have.
Penny and Izzy couldn’t be more different, that is stating the obvious, but they are also perfect for each other. They make each other see things in other perspectives, showing that thinking differently can make you see even more. But they don’t undermine each other, they accept each other just the way they are. 

While being a cozy murder mystery, having a second murder for sure made the balance tip over to the more mysterious side of the story.
Yet the mystery and cozy bits were so linked together, making me smile through the weirder bits! Who has ever heard of experiments with cement, trying to solve a murder? I for sure never did before, and it’s bits like this that makes this book, this whole series, a great adventure to read! 

I have to admit, Penny’s love triangle didn’t go as I hoped it would, but secretly I hope that the author will sense what I want to happen and will make it work! That would be for sure the cherry on top of a majestic cake. And if not, well, it’s a majestic cake anyway, with or without cherry!

My review

Since an incident ten years ago, Ava Warrington has kept a low profile, even on the verge of her being a bit paranoid.
Her job at the Tate Museum is the job of her dreams, but at the same time it also gives her comfort and peace she needs.
But then things start to happen around her that take her peace away. After rejecting a persistent man at the bistro while dining with her best friend, Ava starts to think that that man is somehow responsible for the incident at the museum. And more things start to happen, making Ava wonder if she is just losing her mind, or is someone truly after her? And why? 

If you are looking for a story to give you goosebumps and makes you paranoid too, this book is just perfect!  

From the start, it’s clear that something happened to Ava ten years ago, and she is still carrying that burden. And even if we will only know what towards the end of it, I could sense it was something serious. Even without the details, I could comprehend why Ava wanted a low – key life, having the safety of what she knows to protect her. 

When she rejected the man in the bistro, I knew it was the right thing for her to do. Not only do you always have to do what feels right for you, or makes you feel the safest, but also seeing his persistence and his behaviour, well, I thought Ava got a lucky escape! 

But while from there things start to go bad for Ava, I couldn’t completely agree with her that it was that same man who was after her. Because let’s be honest, why would a rejection lead to such extreme actions? 

This story for sure made me question the intention of people in general. Are they being genuinely nice, or are they being nice for their own agenda? And what about friends who start ghosting you out of the blue?
Ava has to face each of the above, and starts to question her own mental condition somehow. Is she seeing things? Is she being too paranoid? What is real and what isn’t anymore? 

For anyone who hasn’t been through a traumatic event in the past, it’s already creepy enough. But what with happened ten years ago to Ava, it made things even more worse as she kept in mind that somehow the past was coming back for her, that karma would get her. 

I have to admit, the revelation of what happened ten years ago, didn’t truly come as a real shock, yet the extension of it did. It made me understand Ava better, and I could see where her guilt was coming from. Although I wouldn’t have minded if there wouldn’t have been that last ounce of doubt of what really happened..   

The author manages perfectly to keep us on toes, making us guess what was going on. Only to shou w that we were on the wrong track!
There were many twists in this book, some more gruesome than others, which made me want to put the book away, yet at the same time I wanted to keep on reading.

The power of a musical…

My review

She is more than happy to be part of a new musical, and more important, it’s in the theatre that means so much to her and her family. With this unexpected second chance, she is determined to let nothing get in the way, making her lose her focus. And most important, she is determined to stay away from any man linked to theatre.
That is, until she meets Liam Wright, the assistant stage manager….
What started as literally bumping into each other, quickly becomes a friendship and despite their clear clauses in both their contracts, they cannot keep ignoring the sparks that keep flying around. But with Harriet’s own issues, and Liam’s secret, are their feelings enough to put everything they worked so hard for in jeopardy? 

I don’t even know where to start with this review… Because I just loved every tiny bit of it!!!
This book has the perfect combination of many things I love: lovely characters, a beautiful story, a dreamy setting and there is even room for musical! 

My heart truly went out Harriet, because she just has so much on her plate… she has returned with a career torn apart, heart – broken and with no one of her so – called friends in her corner. But while her parents and sister are very supportive of her, at home things aren’t all that better. And not because of terrible characters, but because a terrible, even more heart – breaking situation that concerns her father.
Seeing how things are falling apart, while the whole family just deserve to be a happy one, I felt that pain in my bones… 

Yet I also admired Harriet, as she has found the courage to start all over again, in her hometown, determined to make her family proud again, wanting them to forget all the misery around them.
She was also determined to show people that she isn’t a terrible person, despite the rumours. And we could clearly see that in fact, she is a marvellous, lovely, caring, amazing person! Harriet is a very emotional person, she feels everything and whatever she feels, sparks from the pages. So kudos to the author, as she managed perfectly to make all these emotions so visible! 

From the start I wanted Harriet to meet someone worthy of her love. And the literal clashing with Liam couldn’t be a better start of an amazing story about two people that couldn’t be more perfect to each other! 

Ooh Liam is, even if he is keeping something secret, just so perfect in all possible aspects! He is funny, kind, gentle, patient, but also understanding.
And even if he has to keep his background secret, he still wants to do a good job, show his abilities of being a great stage manager, and prove that he is ready to grow even further. 

But what I liked about him the most, was his eagerness to make Harriet smile, by small gestures but also great gestures, even when they were ‘just friends’. His actions just blew me away. And then also him being there for Harriet at her most difficult moments, even when things were not that great between them.
He is showing he cares about her, even if here is nothing in it for him.
to make it absolutely clear: Liam is swoon – worthy! 

Of course, no matter how lovely the characters are, they also need a good story… and luckily they did! Both of them are no in the easiest positions in their lives, and they want to prove their worth in their own situations.
I liked it how they both try to respect the given boundaries, but I also loved it how it turned out to be absolutely impossible! 😊 

Seeing Harriet and Liam together, with first just being friends, finding each other and being at ease with each other so quickly, was wonderful. I also enjoyed seeing their relationship evolve into more, and I even liked (okay, sounds weird saying it that like) those moments where they just had to give in! 

Even if sometimes the pace seemed to be a tiny bit hasted, it was just so easy to fall in love with both Harriet and Liam, but also all the other side characters. This book shows us that no matter what boundaries someone or something tries to give us, or no matter what difficulties we encounter, love in the end will always prevail. And even if things seem impossible, there is nothing that a musical cannot fix! 😊

My review

Penny and Izzy are slowly turning their sewing shop into success. And there is even an extra resident, Monty the corgi.
With their grandma’s eightieth birthday, the cousins are busier than ever, as the party guests are expected to turn up in costumes.
But things turn quickly into chaos, as Penny finds a murdered woman in the bathroom of her flat, above the shop. With all the doors and windows locked, how did the woman get in there? And how did the murderer get away?
To make things even worse, a local shopkeeper is killed too… are the murders connected? And why?
Time for the cousins to investigate this matter on their own ways! 

This series for sure is growing on me! While I enjoyed the first book, I liked the second one and now I am loving the third one!
Taking the murders aside, I loved reading how things are slowing coming together and it was truly lovely to see how the cousins have been bonding through the series and have become very close. 

I can only try to imagine the horror of discovering a body in your bathroom, and not even understand how it could all been happening.
Isn’t it a creepy thought, knowing someone got in and you have no idea how it happened?
I could also understand Penny, not wanting to stay at the place. And seeing how Izzy came at the rescue, offering support in her unique ways, surely was very sweet. But let’s be honest, did we truly expect anything else from this creative yet a bit strange woman? 

This new cozy murder mystery is a bit different than the previous stories, as this time the cousins are involved with it. It happened at Penny’s house, while the previous murders were yes somehow linked to them, yet it never truly affected them as much as this one.
And maybe, just maybe, in my modest opinion of course, the motive was a tiny bit farfetched, but not at a point that it bothered me. It still allowed me to go with the flow! 

Of course I am still amazed by the sewing abilities of Izzy, and loved reading about Penny’s progress. And it was lovely to see how Izzy is having her own romantic moments, in her typical (un)usual ways! On the other hand, things with Penny are not as clear as I hoped it would, but the series is obviously not finished yet and I have my fingers crossed that in the end, my favourite one will be the one stealing Penny’s heart! 

As I said before, this series is truly growing on my and I have had the best of time on this new murder mystery! Again it was a story that kept me guessing who the murderer was, and despite all the dead bodies appearing here and there, it was a light, quick funny story too! Up to the next one! 😊

My review

After hearing devastating news and not knowing who she truly is, Flora Bick heads to London to have some kind of answers. There, she realizes that she is tired of always holding back, and gives in to the urge of spending the night with an handsome yet complete stranger. Only for her to flee the scene, without even exchanging names.
So obviously she is in total sock a few weeks later when he has found her. And that’s not all, because Raffaele Russo is a very wealthy man, and he won’t allow his child to grow up without a stable upbringing. Because even if Flora didn’t realize it, she is carrying his child.
But will Flora agree to accompany him to Sicily and marry a complete stranger?  

I am always intrigued by stories with unexpected pregnancies, looking forward to see how the parents – to – be will get over the shock of having a baby and how they will find their ways back to each other.
So for me it made sense to read this story, especially as the male character is an Italian. 

Yet while I was reading, I was missing that extra spark…
Was it because it was a bit strange that Flora was being so unworldly and never experienced anything related to love yet, despite her age? And yet managing to have an amazing night with a stranger?
Or because she just gave in to that complete stranger without a second thought? Perhaps it was how easy she agreed to leave her own family behind with a complete stranger?
And even Raffaele wasn’t up to my expectations… Yes, we all know the macho – reputation of Italians, but still…  

Perhaps I was also in not the right mindset, but I didn’t feel the sparks flying around between Flora and Raffaele. It didn’t feel real somehow… 

Yet getting to know their background, made things clearer for me, as I understood why Flora was always holding back, out of fear. Or why Raffaele was so determined to get married to Flora, even if they only spend a few passionate hours together.
Their past both were sad ones, and nobody deserves to be handled such cards in life… Yet that same background also shows that there are people around with a kind heart, giving both characters what their own (biological) parents were lacking. 

Both Flora and Raffaele have their own demons to fight, and in this story it’s clear that for each person it’s a different path they have to walk. While Flora comes at peace quicker than Raffaele, Raffaele truly struggles to come at terms with his past. And those struggles even held him back to see what he has in front of him.
But no matter how long it takes for someone to open up, to come at peace, the reward for the journey will be worth the pain they had to endure…

Yet things may not seem as easy, as the culprit has been seen wearing a mask that came from the sewing shop!
Will the cousins be able to link all the dots and find out the truth? And also, what will they do with the corgi that since the murder is staying at their place?

Now that I know the cousins better, thanks to the first part of this series, it was really great to return to the sewing shop and discovering what mystery they would unravel next!
I have to admit, the speed of murders in this little town could be a bit disturbing, but just like in every cozy mystery, we will cover this matter up with the cloak of love. 

I found it truly sweet to see how Penny and Izzy are getting closer while running the sewing shop. If you would look purely at their characters, they couldn’t be more different, but even in matters of friendships, opposites attract.
It’s thanks to their differences that first of all, they are coming up with great ideas for the shop, but also they find the answer to the mystery – question.
I for sure loved seeing these two characters together! 

But of course there has to be mystery, and it has to somehow involve the duo. I can honestly say that vintage cars aren’t my thing, so I would never ask for a custom – made outfit matching a car. Yet of course, weirder things happen in this series, so why not? 

The murder itself is truly a mysterious one, and it kept me guessing all the way, from start till finish. But not only the murder is a mystery, there are several issues that keep on popping out through the story, adding several mysterious layers, however it never turned truly over – complicated, keeping it always a light tone. 

Of course there is a new entry in the lives f Penny and Izzy, and he for sure stole my heart, despite the mischief he is up to. Obviously I am talking about Monty, the Corgi!
He for sure is a nice addition in the sewing shop, and he is absolutely an asset to this series! 

I loved reading this second chapter, and cannot wait who will be the next victim (okay, sounds rather macabre from my side!), but I also cannot wait to see which creations the cousins will come up with, and even on the love – side, what will happen next! This book gives you exactly what you would expect from this genre, a cozy mystery, a quick read yet never losing the ability to keep you hooked!

My review

Roberta ‘Bobby’ Kinsley may not have a lot, but being the groom for her best friend is more than enough. But when he gets injured, and there is no chance of forfeiting an all – or – nothing horse race, Bobby puts herself forward to take his place.
The opponent, Viscount Hayes, is reluctant to let a woman take part of the endurance race, but also sees an opportunity to easily take back that once was his family property…
Bobby and Lawrence start the race not realizing that despite they infuriate each other, there is something else lingering on the surface between them… 

There is a lot to be said about these kind of stories. Yes, you know what the outcome will be, but is that such  a big problem?
So even if I knew where the story would go to, it still held several surprises for me. 

For example, I truly liked Bobby’s strong character. She is one of the most loyal friends someone could have, but she also knows her own worth. She won’t accept a ‘no’ based on her gender. She is also a very confident woman, knowing that whenever it concerns horses, she is not inferior to other people. The opposite is true, as she is even better than most people!
But also when it comes to intimacy, she is not a gullible young woman who never had any passionate activities.
She knows her world, and is not afraid to stand up and get into literal fights.
Seeing her clash with people who think they know better, not only her best friend, but also her opponent, for sure put a smile on my face. Bobby will show them sure who the best is! 

While I liked her confidence, her determination of never getting married also saddened me a little bit. I understood her motivations, but I also wanted her to have her cake and eat it too!
While Bobby and Lawrence were like chalk and cheese, that was what they had in common, the fear of falling in love. 

Lawrence of course is a man who knows his literal worth, and acts on it too on several occasions. He knows what he wants and goes for it. And even when he thinks he has it all figured out, he doesn’t always realize the consequences of his choices for other people. 

Yet while racing, we see also this caring side of him, as there are several occasions where he is truly worried about Bobby. And like a real man, he sometimes intervenes even when it’s not necessary. And causing even more conflict with Bobby, adding more fun while reading for us! 

Getting to know his background made me feel sorry for him. Not only because h got burnt by love before, but also because that made determined to never fall into the ‘trap’ of marriage again. And while again I could see where he was coming from, it felt wrong for one bad experience to let him refuse the real thing. 

But Bobby and Lawrence fighting each other during the race, was exactly what both characters needed to see that love isn’t always a bad thing. Because love can make you change your mind and see the beauty of what it can bring. 

Being the same kind of tory, but at the same time being a total different one, made me truly enjoy and even laugh while I was reading. And isn’t that the purpose of reading, to enjoy how a story can take you away?

My review

Anne, Jane and Kath have been best friends for years. They have been by each other’s side when gods things happened but also bad things happened.
After their high school reunion, they decide that age is just a number and the world is still their oyster. So what is holding them back to book a luxury two  -week Christmas cruise around the Caribbean?
On the Diamond Star, the three women will have shared adventures but also separate ones. But one thing is for sure, this will be a trip neither one of them will ever forget! 

Before I opened the book, and just read the blurb, I thought this would be a sweet yet funny tale about three women in their sixties, ready to embark on an adventure together.
But I must say I was totally surprised by this book, and it was a good surprise! 

I liked it how the friendship between the three women was still so strong, after all these years. And while their lives took different directions, and their characters were very different, they still keep on finding each other.
Also in the romantic aspect they are completely different, as Anne is almost divorced, Kath is a widow and Jane never married. And it may seem that this are all different yet normal situations, I was a bit shocked towards the end when some truths came out. I did not see especially the big one coming it all! 

Jane was the character I sympathized the most. She felt like the most real of the friends, as she this insecurity and vulnerability about her that many people recognize. But seeing how slowly she got out of her shell was just great to read about.
And then the blooming friendship with Selwyn was the cherry on top of her cake! 

Anne could best be described as a strong character, not allowing anyone to tell her what she should do or not. Especially when she has set her eyes on Dicky, even when there are several red flags she just ignores.
But she is also a loyal friend, giving her friends a nudge in the back when needed. 

Kath can be best described as a dark horse. Recently widowed, it seems that she still mourns the loss of her husband after a wonderful marriage. So reading about her worries about her memory, made me pity her, and add the way her own children act towards her, well I know for sure I still wouldn’t dare to talk to my mother like that!.
Yet it’s only in the second half of the book that we see a side of Kath that was so unexpected. And when we get to know some secrets, I felt sorry for her for what she had to endure, but I somehow also felt that she did what she had to do… 

With the addition of all the other guests on the cruise, and the excursions the women made, it felt like I was on the cruise with them. But beside the holiday – part, this is also a story that age truly is just a number, and that you shouldn’t allow that number to hold you back. Because no matter if you are in your twenties, thirties, forties or even sixties, you never know what Life and Fate still have in store for you.
