An intriguing thriller!

Synopsis

Sometimes the lie is safer than the truth.

Fran made the biggest mistake of her life when she had an affair with Ben. Both families live in the village of Oakheart; their children are friends. Fran’s guilt shadows her days. But it’s no more than she deserves, or is it? At least she’s managed to protect her husband, Hector, from the harsh truth.

But for how long?

Tessa has left her troubles in the past and now has the perfect life. Ben might have his faults, but his life has not been easy. They need each other, and Tessa will do whatever it takes to eliminate any

threats to her marriage. Threats from women like Fran.

A cliff overlooks a disused chalk-pit. The locals call it High Heaven. It’s a place of secrets. And it’s where Oakheart newcomer Maria died. When Fran discovers a link between Maria and Ben, disturbing questions arise to which she has no way of knowing the answers.

Faced with an ultimatum from Tessa, time is running out for Fran. She’s scared, every minute of every day.

But where does the real danger lie?

My review

Sometimes when you are reading a thriller, you get mystery after mystery, finding it hard to remember what all has happened already.
But a good thriller can keep you in suspense even if not a lot is happening.

And this book was such an example…
Fran had an affair a while ago and she thinks she dodged the bullet, as the affair is long over and nobody got hurt as nobody found out about it.
Little does she know that when Tessa, the wife of the man she cheated with, found out the truth…
And Tessa is not someone to mess with!

This story is more about threats and small “gifts” to remind Fran she messed with the wrong persons.
It even had me doubted if it was only Tessa who was messing with Fran’s mind.
Despite no action is really happening, there is this imminent forecast of ‘bad things are going to happen’ that made me hooked to the story.
And then there is the issue of the past. As Ben (Tessa’s husband) appears to be cheating on a regular base, is the death of his former mistress a real suicide or is there more to it?

It shows you how a person can mess with somebody’s mind,  and how loving somebody too much can be wrong.
To keep it short: this story got me intrigued and I just had to find the truth!
