My review

Vanessa Sawyer had to marry the father of her child. Yet it was not a happy marriage, as abuse was a daily thing for her.
Only silver lining was her baby boy, Wren. She finally understands what unconditional love is, and this feeling only grows with her second child.
Vanessa is proud of the young man Wren is becoming. He is caring, kind and looks after her and his brother.

But one night a terrible thing happens… and Vanessa is resolute to find out the truth. What secrets was Wren hiding?

From the very start, I felt sorry for Vanessa. Being maybe a bit naïve, Vanessa sleeps with the man who will be the father of her child.
Being naïve, as I knew immediately that it was just a slick move of Mark and would be the beginning of a tragedy. This one bad decision will haunt her for the rest of her life.
Mark is not a caring husband at all, and a total absent father. He couldn’t care less about his children.

Vanessa was naïve in the beginning, but when she has to protect her children, she does whatever she can. She is determined to raise her children the right way, so that they will not become like their father, even if this means she has to take all the beating.

The first part of the story is the sad tale of Vanessa, so that we are able to understand her better. The second part start on a positive vibe. Without giving any spoilers, but life is looking better for Vanessa and her sons.

We get to know Wren also better, as he is nearly an adult now. And when he meets this girl at school, I believed we were getting a happily ever after for everyone.
But tragedy strikes again and it left me agape…
This family just have to endure tragedy after tragedy and it’s just not fair…
So it’s understandable that Vanessa wants to figure out what happened.

Yet those lasts chapters were an emotional rollercoaster! When secrets were unfolded, there were no indications that the truth would be a nasty one. It truly devastated me, and even when I finished this book, I needed some time to digest what just had happened.

This book is not to be taken lightly. I knew there would be violence in it, but there are things even worse than only the violence. Even thinking about the ending now, is still given me goosebumps as not everything is what it seems!
